Walking Club Check-In: Walking Down Memory Lane

Every Fourth of July, I venture back to the neighborhood I grew up in to see the annual parade that's been a homespun tradition for more decades than I can count. It's not a fancy parade with marching bands and floats--but rather the type of parade where local politicians wave from their cars and throw candy, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts march, and the local high school band plays. Plus, lots of neighborhood kids dress up in red, white, and blue to either march in the parade, or to ride along the parade route on their bikes.

I remember being in that parade as a young child with pony tails marching along that parade route thinking that I had hit the "big time." After all, how often in our lives do we get the chance to march along a parade route to the admiration of onlookers? In a young person's imagination, life didn't get any better than that.

But what also amazes me now that I'm a grown-up and walk many miles at a fast clip for exercise, is just how long that parade route felt. It was just two miles in length, but to my younger self that felt like a marathon. By the end of the parade, I felt like I'd accomplished a 5K.

On Monday I'll be back at that parade, seeing all of the children and grandchildren of the neighborhood kids I grew up with. Plus, this year, I just might put a red, white, and blue bow in my hair and walk that parade route...as my personal trip down memory lane.
