As a cardiologist, I’ve long advocated drinking green tea. That’s because research suggests that the benefits of green tea include supporting cardiovascular health and normal blood pressure. In fact, a Japanese study conducted at the Nippon Medical School found a strong correlation between green tea consumption and better heart health.

In recent years, scientists have also discovered that the catechins in green tea are a powerful metabolism booster. The reason is that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—which is the most abundant catechin in green tea—inhibits the enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine. That means it keeps norepinephrine around in your system longer, keeping your metabolism rate up so you burn more calories.
How to Get the Benefits of Green Tea
One way to get the cardiovascular benefits of green tea is to swap out one of your beverages each day for a big mug of green tea. You can find highquality tea in health-food stores, or check your phone book to see if there’s an Asian Teahouse in your area—since the largest variety of green teas are usually found in these specialty shops.
