Science and Quality

CoQ10

Cardiologists often call CoQ10 the "miracle nutrient" because it fuels your cellular power plants. CoQ10 also acts as a potent antioxidant—hunting and destroying free radicals that can damage your heart health and overall well-being.

  • Hydro-Q-Sorb® is one of the only free flowing CoQ10 powders in the world that has been shown in human studies to be several times more bioavailable than plain CoQ10 powder.
  • CoQ10 plays several roles in the body including participating in mitochondrial cellular energy production, acting as a powerful antioxidant, and promoting the antioxidant activity of vitamin E.
  • Statin drug therapy has been shown to deplete levels of CoQ10.1 Additional intake of CoQ10 through dietary supplements may help replenish CoQ10 levels.2

L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is a key mitochondrial nutrient that shuttles fatty acids into the mitochondria where they are used to generate ATP.

  • Dr. Sinatra prefers L-carnitine fumarate as it complements the CoQ10 and carnitine by providing fumaric acid for use in the Kreb’s cycle. Together these nutrients participate in cellular ATP energy production.
  • Extremely preliminary cell line research suggests that CoQ10 and L-carnitine may have a synergistic effect on mitochondrial metabolism and exhibit stronger free radical scavenging effects when given at the same time.3
  • Vegetarian diets are low in sources of L-carnitine, which may make it difficult to deliver the required amounts of this key nutrient during times of increased demand.4

D-ribose

Ribose, one of the building blocks of ATP, is a simple five carbon sugar that drives ATP synthesis and recycling.

  • Ribose is made in a pathway called the pentose phosphate pathway(PPP). Once formed, ribose can , including ATP. The PPP pathway is slow and inefficient in the heart and skeletal muscle tissues. Ribose supplementation bypasses this step and enables ATP pools, and the energy potential of the cell, to be rebuilt more quickly.5
  • Two double blind, placebo controlled, randomized studies assessed the effects of ribose supplementation on cardiac functioning and quality of life. The first study found that those receiving ribose supplementation had improved heart and physical functioning.
  • Ribose also plays a role in recovery from intense exercise. Research has examined the effects of ribose supplementation on cardiac stress during exercise. It was discovered that consuming ribose immediately before and after exercise resulted in a reduced heart rate, less free radical production, and lower cardiac stress compared to those not taking ribose.6,7
  • CoQ10 is an antioxidant that is needed to make electrons go down the transport chain for ATP production. So while CoQ10 can enhance ATP production, ribose supports ATP regeneration after periods of depletion from exercise or cardiac stress. This combination may allow for optimal energy generation and maintenance.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential nutrient that is necessary for many metabolic activities, including ATP energy production and promoting energy and physical endurance.

  • Magnesium has therapeutic effects on the cardiovascular system.8
  • Epidemiological studies suggest that high dietary intake of magnesium is associated with healthy blood pressure.9,10,11
  • Supplementation with magnesium (400 to 600 mg per day) has demonstrated significant effects in promoting and maintaining normal blood pressure values.12,13,14,15 It has been suggested that magnesium may affect blood pressure through its effects on the secretion of adrenal hormones, which cause an increase in sodium excretion.16 This results in less water retention. Less body water reduces the volume of blood pumping through the cardiovascular system.
  • Magnesium supports the endothelial lining of the blood vessels.17
