I’m at that age in life where many of my friends are being diagnosed with prostate cancer. And while I am happy to report that all of them are doing well, I am always on the lookout for more natural approaches for the prostate.
According to 2011 research out of Johns Hopkins Medical Institute, taking a pomegranate supplement daily may slow the progression of prostate cancer.
In their study of 92 men, those taking one to three one-gram tablets of pomegranate extract every day slowed their rising levels of the “tumor marker” PSA (prostate-specific antigen). After six months of taking the pomegranate capsules, their PSA levels doubled every 19 months, instead of every 12 months.
Pomegranates are also one of my heart-healthy Super Foods. They’re endothelial cell friendly which protects the heart, and in some studies they’ve been associated with the reversal of coronary and carotid artery plaque.
What’s the best way to incorporate pomegranate in your diet? I like to eat fresh organic pomegranates when they’re available. I also rely on easy-to-find pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice makes a refreshing spritzer. I also add it as a key ingredient when I juice at home.
