As those of you who have been following Dr. Sinatra for a while now are fully aware that he is part of a new breed in medicine—a proponent of integrative therapy in medicine. And nothing makes him more stimulated than sharing ideas with like-minded professionals who don't need convincing about the efficacy of blending the best of both worlds: mainstream and "alternative" medical approaches.
Cardiology is an ideal specialty for an integrative therapy approach because heart disease is so preventable. And now there is a textbook that embraces all that Dr. Sinatra believes in.
Book Focuses on Integrative Therapies in Cardiology
This past year, Dr. Sinatra responded to an invitation to contribute to a book by board-certified cardiologists Dr. Stephen Devries and Dr. James Dalen, titled Integrative Cardiology (Oxford University Press). The book is part of Dr. Andrew Weil's Integrative Medicine Library.
Dr. Sinatra penned Chapter 5 on metabolic cardiology, and collaborated on Chapter 11 about hypertension with Dr. Mark Houston, associate clinical professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University and director of the Hypertension Institute and Vascular Biology at Nashville's St Thomas Hospital.
Dr. Devries is associate professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern University and has a busy preventive cardiology clinic where he practices integrative therapy in cardiology. Dr. James Dalen is executive director at the Weil Foundation, as well as being dean emeritus and professor emeritus of medicine and public health at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
A total of 18 physicians contributed to the book, and I am really impressed that such an elite group of practitioners took the time to emphasize integrated cardiology approaches in a textbook library series that is easy to follow, whether you are medically trained or just looking to be more educated on the subject.
