Cell Phone Radiation Risks
Some of my neurology colleagues are convinced that cell phones are involved in cases of tinnitus, or ringing in the ear. They also believe that, unfortunately, we will be seeing a surge in brain tumors as cell phone use becomes more widespread. It may take years to get the evidence of cell phone radiation risks, and the early results should be getting more press.
As a cardiologist, I am impressed by the scientific evidence of the negative impact these unseen forces (electromagnetic fields or EMF) have on heart rate variability—a good measure of heart health. I often compare EMF to the wind: You cannot “see” wind, only the damage it can due in excessive doses.
If I can convince you of anything, do NOT put a cell phone near your ear. And do NOT place blue tooth devices in your ears either! Use the speakerphone feature, and have your children do the same. If you are a user or buying one a s a gift, be sure to check their SAR rating to see how much wireless smog is being emitted from the model you are considering. The lower the SAR value, the less dangerous the technology.
On the plus side, the newer 3G networks are safer, so make sure yours is a 3G phone. And avoid any cell phone use in areas where what I call the “evil E” appears, usually in the upper left corner of your screen. The E, a signal more common in rural areas, signifies that you employing the “EDGE” network, an older technology that presents a large radiation exposure, even on a 3G phone.
If you do allow your children to use cell phones, please choose wisely. Put boundaries on their usage and encourage texting over talking. Most of all, talk to them about cell phone radiation risks.
