Immune-Boosting Tips for a Happy, Healthy Holiday Season

As many of us prepare for the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of it all—from shopping, to cleaning, and hosting guests. Stress can really wipe us out and make us more vulnerable to illness. So, here’s my stay-healthy strategy for your holiday season.

  • Take time to recharge. The first step to counteracting stress is to give ourselves what we need to rest and regroup—whether it’s a nap, meditating, playing with the grandkids, or even watching a good movie.
  • Stick to a diet of low-glycemic carbohydrates, healthy fats, and quality proteins before and after the holiday—if not through it. It’s also important to avoid sugary/processed foods, wheat, and dairy products which can suppress the immune system in some individuals.
  • Fight microbes with microbes, by taking probiotics. These healthy bacteria help to populate your gut with health-promoting bacteria which support your digestion as well as your immune system.
  • Ensure that you’re getting enough vitamin D, which is crucial for immune system health. Those of us living in the Northern U.S. or Canada often don’t get adequate sun exposure during the winter months, and need to supplement. Taking 2000 IU’s a day of Vitamin D throughout the winter season is generally a safe and effective way of priming your immune system.
