From an early age, Dr. Stephen Sinatra discovered his quest to relieve human suffering. As a boy growing up in New York, he was greatly impacted by his mother’s painful battle with diabetes, glaucoma, and eventual blindness. Though helpless in alleviating her suffering, he felt that as a doctor, he might help others. He credits her illness with causing him to look deeper into himself, and transforming him into the kind of doctor that truly cares about his patients.
Building A Solid Foundation
Dr. Sinatra completed his conventional medical school training at Albany Medical College in New York. After completing five years of training in internal medicine, psychiatry, and cardiology, he joined a bustling cardiology practice. In medical school, he had learned to be an “iron man,” devoid of feelings and able to function on little sleep. Later, he understood the costs of such a disconnect.
While working long hours in cardiac care, he witnessed the destructive patterns of many of his heart patients. Generally, they were driven, competitive, type A personalities prone to developing heart disease.
While looking for remedies, he quickly realized that conventional medicine didn’t offer the solution. By the time many of his patients came to him, their conditions were too far gone. Many were searching for alternatives to surgery; most wanted to make decisions about their treatment.
Advancing to Alternative Medicine
Dr. Sinatra began to shift his focus away from disease treatment and toward disease prevention. He searched for alternative approaches to healing, becoming certified in bioenergetic analysis. With bioenergetics, he began studying mind-body interactions. Looking beyond the disease, he focused on the physical, metabolic, emotional, and mental aspects of the body.
Through bioenergetics, Dr. Sinatra learned about energy systems—the body’s ability to operate, sustain, and heal itself. Then came the recognition that nutrition plays a vital role in heart health. Since becoming a certified nutritional specialist, he now holds the rare distinction of being both a cardiologist and clinical nutritionist, a further testament to his conviction that nutrition and supplementation are the gateways to optimum health.
Educator and Healer
Founder of the New England Heart and Longevity Center, a Center for Anti-Aging Medicine, Dr. Sinatra integrates conventional medical treatments for heart disease with complementary nutritional, anti-aging, and psychological therapies.
He has written numerous books about the many aspects of heart disease. The Sinatra Solution highlights treatment options, and works to dispel myths surrounding heart disease, while Heart Sense for Women seeks to educate women about the specifics of heart disease, particularly since their symptoms can often go undiagnosed.
Most importantly, it is clear that his decades of education, training, and practical experience have shown him the wisdom of practicing both conventional and alternative medicine, and that having a multidisciplinary approach to health and healing truly is smart medicine.
